IS PAPER REALLY BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Our office printing area has signage SAVE A TREE!! Use Paper Wisely

The Philippines has 3.2% remaining rainforest causing 46 species are endangered and 4 were completed erased from existence. There are two main causes of this shrinking forest (1) mindless logging and (2) agricultural conversion

Paper, although coming from wood, are renewable material. They can be recycled over and over again. However, the environmental aspects go to energy consumption from production or recycling causing CO2 emission, and mindless usage ends up to landfill which cause to need to increase raw materials (trees) .

Although there is a study that reading newspapers can consume 20% less carbon than viewing news online, it is recommended not to do both at all.

In the world of multimedia, responsibly sourced print and paper may be the most sustainable way to communicate.

According to study, alternative media has its own impact too:

  • One email with 400k attachment sent to 20 people, is equivalent to burning 100w light bulb for 20 minutes.

  • 100 searches on Google is equivalent to ironing a shirt, which is equivalent to 20g CO2.

  • The average energy consumption on the level of a typical Google user is about 180-watts-hours a month, or the equivalent of running a 60-watt light bulb for three hours.

  •

E-waste is fast growing and can be toxic

This insight is not to encourage our wasteful habit on paper usage but as awareness that we should become wiser that everything we do has environmental impact. The earth has limited carrying capacity. Our collective efforts provide a considerable effect on how we fit on this limited capacity.
