THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVIL
It is considered that our traditional belief systems provide the highest moral guidance and the conduct of humanity. At one time, a famous preacher, a PhD in theology, lectures about forgiveness. The teaching was very informative and uplifting how to release oneself from hatred or resentment, and the effect for being unforgiving. For me, this is actually a controversial and challenging doctrine for humanity, considering the question “Can parents forgive the one who raped, tortured and murdered their beloved daughter who just graduated from college?” As you can see, the problem of forgiveness is virtually same as the problem of condemnation because it does not solve anything about the root-cause with regards to crime and violence.
As a trained Root Cause Analyst, I attempted to apply this is wring doings as moral issue. As a result of years study and data gathering, it turns out that the problem is not morality but the social system itself.
Traditional institutions consider violence and crime more on moral issues – not as socio-economic foundational issues. We are struggling to reform or correct behavior through static doctrines and re-create philosophical interpretation to force-fit with the ever changing society.
The government ruling penalize offender bylaw, while, belief system sees them as moral defect. There is actually no problem in these practices provided that an obvious constant struggle and gaps are the matter of fact.
We often rationalize duality, that if your spiritual belief is weak, then, you can be easily deceived by devil, demon or Satan. Satan who exists to temp human to sin (Webster Dictionary) or to separate human from God, looks perfectly fit to crimes and violence – as the opposite of good and kindness.
In November 2012 at bonifacio global city, Philippines, two batang hamog killed a 9-year old boy by drowning when unable to give the latter money they were demanding. Another batang hamog incident when a teenage girl mauled and robbed by this group in quezon city. Some of these children were arrested and turned over to Social Welfare Department for rehabilitation.
A family was murdered and found decaying inside a septic tank. A young woman was raped twice and murdered for giving her a lesson from spreading a rumour. Innocents died from a senseless cause in the famous Maguindanao Massacre. Add to these crimes and violence statistics are carjacking, hold-ups, murder, corruption, rape, drug trafficking, piracy, white slavery, name all, we have that. Once caught, the law provides a particular penalty for the crime. Drug addiction is a punishable offence but not a crime. Drug addiction is a symptom that there is something wrong with the system, just like those mentioned crimes and violence.
Condemnation of offender is the common feat to make sense to offense and penalty, as provided by the law. If a certain case draws a gray line in justice system then the law maker, of course, create additional or amend law to cover them. If crime and violence are rampant of course increase law enforcers and visibility would be necessary.
How could we eliminate Satan to avoid people from committing brutal and evil acts? The answer is none, because Satan does not exist. It is very hard to solve something illusive. Of course it is impractical to say that money is Satan.. otherwise lots of pocket may have devil in them..
The underlying cause of such negative acts is a culture that stimulates this behavior. Offenders’ behavior are being influenced and conditioned by a sub-culture created by main culture. If our culture is for competition for material acquisition or in order to live you should have money, then the sub-culture might be case to case such as batang hamog who might not undergone appropriate parental care, or being taught with good behavior, or being innocent to the consequence that may arise for such action, which stimulated by the urge to have money for a meal. With his friends having the same paradigm further stimulate such violent behavior enough to put them into action.
As you can see, if a military shoot a rebel, or a rebel shoot a military, its not about evil act. It is all about the sub-culture they went through. Their minds are conditioned and trained from this sub-culture to kill an enemy at site. Modify culture and sub-culture and you will modify behavior. Solving these problems as moral issues would be futile which is pretty obvious in what is actually happening nowadays.
Of course it is absurd to assume that those people who already been deeply-seated and conditioned with their culture and sub-culture is correctable instantly by changing environment. What we are saying here is that the very foundation of social structure must be reset in order to restart the gradual evolution of new moral and social foundation.
The question of Free Will is invalid because the question itself does not make so much sense - No one has free will. At the time you were born and began developing behavior you were being influenced by someone (like parental) or something else (environment or society). It is impossible for an infant to grow up on his/her own someone must take care of him/her primarily his/her parent, or chose where he/she wanted to be born. Parents, whatever tradition, belief, knowledge, etc are being passed on, initially, to this child. The indoctrination of these children makes them bind to the society they live in. As they grow up more complex influential pattern will be fed to shape his/her paradigm.
