It is an undeniable fact that addiction to oil and oil-base products are getting worst. Luxurious and materialistic lifestyle have developed drastically that we recognize them as human standards for growth and advancements. The problem is that while human enjoying this indulgence, natural resources are keep on depleting along with human consciousness about their uncorrupted objective. We are beginning to explore remote parts of the world like Antarctica, Arctic regions, Alaskan wilderness and deep waters, even interfering with wildlife sensitive areas, which is not new nowadays. While consuming massive dose of oil and oil-based products, massive CO2 is dumped onto the atmosphere aggravating greenhouse gas.
Policies about renewable energy have been implemented as preparation for the apparent oil crisis looming ahead. Ironically while fossil fuel is depleting population keeps on growing so as the relentless waste generation and mindless consumption of all available resources, which further accelerate decaying scenario along with human civilization.
Very few are noticing this decaying scenario because our paradigm is pre-occupied with short-term plans, growth propaganda and the urgency to accomplish day-to-day requirements. This is a realistic problem which is not so tricky to understand.
Applied technology, environmental, health, safety, growth, sustainability and socio-economic aspects can never be in the state of equilibrium. On the contrary, they oppose each other as growth boosts economy, the environment suffers from wastes and pollution, or as society becomes more sustainable the less economic growth in the dashboard economic indicator. In other words, abundance can never be attained in our current social paradigm.
Renewable energy resource is one of the key solutions for growth and environmental protection provided that their core purposes have never defeated on the first place - serving the welfare of society in general, including those unfortunate individuals cannot afford financially. Sadly, this can never exists in the real world when market-based and self-preserving industries come into the picture.
Part of my study is surveying people living in rural communities who cannot afford to have electric utility power and water supplies. I realize that their needs are basic and straight forward – lighting, potable water, enough food to eat, of course, health/hygiene (like toilet) and safety. In times of drought, many areas are not designed to withstand this punishing climatic event. These are some concepts that engineers and architects should consider as a new level of social designs.
The distributions of human needs are quite in a huge gradient across the world. Economic system suddenly become a dictator who will own riches, who will control commodities, who will serve for riches and who will starve to death. There are people own luxurious toilets worth hundred thousand dollars while others are looking for any corner as toilet. Food crises are an imaginary scenario in market-based system from which distribution becomes obstructed due to monetary competition and acquisition. In reality food industries produce and manufacture billions of tons each year for people who can afford to eat even five times a day at luxury level, while millions of people are craving to have at least one meal a day.
The privatization of public utilities and basic commodities such as food, water and electricity are not strategically reasonable. In market-based system, self-preservation and maximum profitability are top priorities to keep the ball rolling. While talents, skills and labor forces become a cheap commodity entangled to a lifetime servitude and debenture.
We must take a whole new way in managing human civilization symbiotically progressing with nature and maintaining intimate attachment with co-human beings without any particular discrimination. Our planet has limited natural resources, tolerance to ecological imbalance, environmental threshold, and following social entropic cycle just like other lost or perished ancient civilizations.
Our journey with this essay is to discover alternative way of managing power system associated with social structure and other basic utility supply strategies. We will also discover that fossil fuels are more practical as secondary source rather than primary. Finally, we will discover that materialistic lifestyle is not a social norm but a pre-occupation from sub-cultural practices, and a primary arsenal for environmental genocide.
