Social structure is very asymmetrical. Cities, infrastructures, industries, services, markets, residential and basic supplies are in a wide variety of unevenness. Engineers and architects are attuned to force-fit their design with these social structures.

Electrical energy supply is one of the foundations of civilization in the form of generation, transmission and distribution systems. It should be understood that the cost of transmission and distribution are far more than power generating plants combined. Our electric bills are adjusted with plant depreciation, transmission losses, generation losses, distribution losses, operations and maintenance overheads. In short, consumers are fried with their own oil. The essence of true objective of economic system in terms of efficiency, sustainability, environmentalism and human welfare is defeated in the world of market-based energy.

Direct Current and Alternating Current power system

In the war of currents in 1880s Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse became adversaries promoting DC by Edison and AC by Westinghouse. Westinghouse, by the way, acquired many of Nikola Tesla patent in AC. AC prevails from lower cost and practicality of installation. AC is indeed a rigorous alternative in the point bulk and market-based power generation system,

However, with the rising development of electronic devices, solar and wind energy generators, DC can revive a more than century old argument. In spite of the pros and cons, DC system can defeat AC with the same reason how DC is being defeated. Among these are the absences of inductance, dielectric losses and less heat generation acquired in transmission, distribution and conversion for electronic supplies.

It is quite difficult to reconcile DC system with the market-based power system because of the installation protocol and the industry practices itself. For instance, the equipment of a newly constructed building is AC and if a solar panel had to installed, either a grid-connect or a stand-alone inverter may be required. Lightings, ACUs, Chillers, pump/vent fan motor, PCs, Telecoms Servers, TVs, Radios, and other facilities are AC supplied, but most of them are actually DC circuits. In other words, all residential and commercial establishments can be a stand-alone DC installation. All we have to do is to remove the internal AC/DC converter and replace with DC regulator.

The reason why inverter is required when we install solar panel and/or wind turbine is because the available appliances and equipment is AC. If you can be able to convert all your appliances such as lighting, TV, electric fan, water heater, video/music player, computer and cellphone charger, you would not be so dependent in AC supply and your local power system will be far more efficient, sustainable and greener. Imagine if one million household will convert with DC system.

One of the reasons why it is not feasible is that most of the commercial installations like malls, luxury hotels and factories that manufacture non-essential goods require massive power requirement, and that the application of DC is not practical and cost effective. A simple solution, or rather answer to this question is “we don’t actually need this establishment”, it’s pretty wasteful to have them. It is not easy to reject them because they are not only part of our lifestyle but the system allows them. They are constituents of growth in our growth paradigm.
